Potty Training Tips
A receptacle potty is the most common device used for toilet training. The other way is to use the normal toilet with a toilet seat adapter suitable for the child’s size. Here, we will discuss briefly about “Potty Training Tips”.
Switching from the diaper to trainer pants or normal underpants is also a good idea in this phase. At first, do this switch from the nappy to the trainer pants or underpants only during the day. Start doing it at night only after reasonable control is achieved during the day.
Actual training
There are five simple steps to toilet training a baby. Go through them individually according to your child’s readiness and response. Give a minimum of 5-10 days for each step. It is the third R, which is to establish the routine of toilet habits gradually and phased.
Step 1: Place the potty or the toilet seat in the toilet. Take your toddler to the toilet and make him sit on the potty for a while. Don’t remove pants or nappies during this step. Repeat this step a few times every day for at least a week. Make it like a game. Do not associate it with passing stools or urine.
Step 2: Once the child is used to the idea of sitting on the potty, you start removing the pants when putting the child on the potty. Repeat it a few times every day. Do not associate it with passing stools or urine.
Step 3: When the child soils the pants or diaper, put the child on the potty and remove the soiled nappy from the potty. Let The child see the flushing away of the feces. If the child is afraid of the flushing noise despite your reassurance, give him a few more days to get used to it. This step is to make the child realize that the potty or the toilet is for disposing of waste.
Step 4: It is time for the child to practice what you preached. The shadow boxing is over, and the actual battle begins. In this step, remove the child’s pants and tell the child to try to pass stools while sitting on the potty. Do this at a time when the child usually passes stools. Do it twice or thrice a day according to the child’s habit.
Slowly but surely, the child will master the skill. Show your appreciation for the child’s new-found mastery of this bodily function.
Step 5: In the final step, the child trained to go alone to the potty, independently remove the pants, and pass bodily wastes on the potty.
Achieving full bowel and bladder control is a long process and happens in stages. The usual order is night-time bowel control first, followed by daytime bowel control, followed by daytime bladder control, and finally, night-time bladder control. Understand well that, along the way, there will be some incidents or ‘accidents’ when the child soils the pants or the bed. ‘No harsh negative comments or measures’ is a way to deal with such episodes.
Cleaning the baby
Cleaning the child with water is perhaps a more hygienic option than using toilet paper. The direction of wiping should be from front to back to avoid passing germs to the urinary tract. Fixing a water-jet pipe in the toilet will help you teach the child to easily clean himself after passing stools.
Teach the child to wash his hands with soap and water after using the toilet. That completes toilet training. So, you can put your feet up and relax.
